At its 17th session (May–June 2011), the Human Rights Council adopted resolution A/HRC/17/L.8 on the rights of the child, with a focus on accelerating progress in ending violence against children. The resolution reaffirmed the obligations of States to protect children from all forms of violence in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its Optional Protocols. It called upon States to implement the recommendations of the UN Secretary-General's Study on Violence against Children (2006) and to strengthen the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children. The resolution also urged States to adopt comprehensive legislation prohibiting all forms of violence against children, including corporal punishment in all settings.
