SRSG Santos Pais visits Malawi

SRSG Santos Pais visited Malawi from 22 – 26 March 2015 to support the launch of a new study, commissioned by the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, on the prevalence of violence against children in the country. She held discussions with senior officials of the Government of Malawi, Parliamentarians and other key stakeholders, including civil society representatives, on the importance of using data and research to shed light on the hidden reality of violence against children and to implement an evidence-based policy agenda to protect children from all forms of violence.

"The study results highlight that violence against children is everyone’s business and that protecting children must be mainstreamed and incorporated through every sector. It is a collective responsibility that requires cross-sectoral cooperation and coordination involving health, education and social welfare ministries, as well as agencies responsible for planning and budgeting, law enforcement authorities, and the justice system as well as civil society, faith-based organizations, the media, the private sector, research institutions, development partners, and of course, children themselves”, said SRSG Santos Pais.

Whilst in Malawi, Ms Santos Pais visited the districts most affected by the recent floods, as well as child protection services in Blantyre.
